Commitments that raise the personal cost of backsliding enhance adherence. Where feasible, use defaults, procurement rules and infrastructure investments to shift the baseline. Individual level interventions are powerful for incremental change and for demonstrating feasibility. For structural shifts that materially reduce emissions at scale prioritize policy, infrastructure and market rules. Examples include changing building codes, investing in public transit, or altering procurement standards. Combining system level change with behaviorally informed implementation creates durable results and prevents the burden of change from falling on individuals alone.

Practical example

Imagine a campus aiming to reduce single occupancy car trips. A behaviorally informed program would first specify the target and measure baseline mode share. The team would diagnose barriers such as limited transit options, inconvenient bike parking and low awareness of alternatives. Interventions could include improving bike parking and showers, setting transit as a default in new employee welcome packs, offering real time transit information at key decision points, and running a pilot with a voluntary commute pledge plus a small reward. The program would track changes in actual trips, adjust tactics that underperform and scale the combination that proves effective.

Behavior change for sustainability is practical when it rests on a clear diagnosis, evidence based tactics and measurement that focuses on actual behavior and net impact. Well designed interventions recognize the power of context and defaults, support people while systems shift, and combine short term wins with durable structural changes.
